Quest 15: The Four Storms

Introduction

"As you approach the Temple of the Four Storms, you think back to Koth's briefing on the place. "You must find and destroy the Four Storms before Zachareth's minions unlock their secrets. Before Gryvorn's defeat at the hands of the Shadow Binders, his generals set out to harness some of the most primal powers in the world. One of the powers Gryvorn most coveted was the power over the elements. After many rituals, his most powerful sorcerers were able to contain these destructive powers into the Four Storms—artifacts that can control the four elements. After Gryvorn's defeat, we locked the Four Storms away in a temple, which was once guarded by rune wardings. But their power has surely faded, and the time has come to destroy them once and for all."

"Merick has no doubt discovered the location of the temple by now. If he manages to unlock the power of these stones, he will be able to control the terrifying elementals. You must destroy the Four Storms! Each of them is tied to a powerful being of primal energy, and if any of them were to be combined, they would create a devastating enemy indeed! Do not let Merick unlock the stones."

Monsters

Setup

Place 1 open monster group on the Ritual Chamber. The other open group is not placed during setup. Lord Merick Farrow is not placed during this encounter.

Place search tokens based on the number of heroes.

Each objective token is a Storm Stone, and each Storm Stone is associated with a different element and a different attribute.

  • The stone on the River's Edge is the Water Stone (blue objective token): it is associated with [Willpower]
  • The stone on the Canyon is the Earth Stone (green objective token): it is associated with [Strength]
  • The stone on the Lava Cave is the Fire Stone (red objective token): it is associated with [Strength]
  • The stone on the Frozen Cave is the Air Stone (white objective token): it is associated with [Perception]

Place each of the objective tokens facedown to represent the magical locks that hold the stones in place.

Special Rules

The Storm Stones

Heroes may attack the stones as if they were monster figures. Each stone has 8 Health and does not roll any defense dice. When a hero destroys a stone, place the corresponding objective token in the heroes' play area.

Lord Merick's Ritual

At the start of each Overlord turn, he may test one of Lord Merick Farrow's attributes to attempt to unlock the associated stone. Lord Merick Farrow is not on the map, but he is below the temple attempting a ritual to unlock the stones in order for his minions to retrieve them.

If he passes his test, flip the associated objective token faceup—it is unlocked and may now be picked up as described later.

Each time he fails his test, place 1 fatigue token on his Lieutenant card. He receives +1 [die] to each attribute per fatigue token on him. Each time he passes a test, remove all fatigue tokens from his card.

Carrying Stones

Once a stone has been unlocked, any monster may pick it up as an action. While a monster is carrying a stone, the stone cannot be attacked. If a monster moves off the map through either the Entrance or Exit while carrying a stone, place the objective token representing that stone in the Overlord player's play area. A monster can only carry 1 stone at a time.

Reinforcements

At the beginning of each Overlord turn, he may place 1 monster from 1 of his monster groups on either the Entrance or the Exit, respecting group limits.

Victory

Hero Victory

If the heroes manage to destroy 3 of the Storm Stones, read the following aloud:

A deafening crash sounds from below, as if lightning had just rent the temple asunder. A voice rises above the clamor. "You fools! You have released the elder!"

The heroes win this encounter! Place the remaining objective token by the Overlord. This is important during Encounter 2.

Overlord Victory

If there are no stones left on the map, and the heroes did not destroy 3 of them, read the following aloud:

The temple begins to shake violently, and stones fall from above. Something is happening below.

The Overlord wins this encounter! Note the objective tokens that are in the Overlord player's play area; they are important during Encounter 2.
